No one could have ever imagined that a tiny sinister tattoo would tear an entire family apart!

No one could have ever imagined that a tiny sinister tattoo would tear an entire family apart!

Kates birthday present for her daughter, a butterfly tattoo delicately etched on her wrist, caused quite the unexpected family kerfuffle. What had seemed like her daughters innocent teenage dreamfinally getting inkedquickly snowballed into a lively household drama, much to everyones secret enjoyment (though some were more vocal about it than others). Granny Helen, in particular, was deeply flustered and immediately set about pondering how best to help the poor girl rid herself of this affliction.

Kates circle of friends were thoroughly unhelpful, gleefully predicting disastrous consequences: expulsion from university, vanishing job prospects, and the absolute impossibility of finding a husband who shops anywhere other than Camden Market. It was disaster on the scale of a soggy Wimbledon final.

Helen wasted no time in wagging her finger at Kate and her husband, lamenting their lack of parental backbone. In her view, they should have guided their daughter properly, or at the very least, had the decency to consult her before escorting the girl to what she referred to as that den of needles. However, from Kates point of view, it was just a teeny tattoo. Their daughter was, after all, eighteena fully-fledged adult in the eyes of the law, and, more importantly, someone savvy enough to wear suncream and swap her own library books. Kate and her husband were quite proud of her academic achievements and thought she deserved to tick something off her wish list.

Alas, Helen is firmly of the old school, steadfast in her conviction that tattoos belong exclusively to sailors, football hooligans, and people with suspect haircuts. She aired her opinions with the cheerful severity of someone who remembers rationing. Kate and her husband attempted to assure her, rather diplomatically, that times had changed, and tattoos were now more about personal expression and slightly less about criminal ties or distinct lack of employment. They cheerily explained that the world had moved on, though Helen, for her part, remained deeply suspicious of both butterfly motifs and modernity.

In the end, the only thing everyone could agree on was that Kates daughter looked delighted with her birthday present. Helen, meanwhile, was left grappling with the concept that times, much like fashion trends, march ruthlessly onward.

So, should Kate and her husband have put their foot down and said no to the tattoo? Its one of those endlessly debatable questions, swaying with the changing tides of culture and generation. On the one hand, some will claim that parents need to rein in youthful impulses wherever possible, preferably with stern tea and the occasional raised eyebrow. Others argue that, once a child becomes an adult, it is only fair to grant them enough rope to make their own choices, questionable or not, even if it means butterfly tattoos today and, heaven forbid, snakebites tomorrow.
