🚨 The M*RDER CHARGE has been DROPPED for the Missouri mother who put her eight-week-old BABY IN AN OVEN in 2024.Mariah Thomas said she "mistook" the oven for the crib. Za’Riah Mae d*ed, and her mother received a mere 13-year sentence under a plea deal. JUSTICE HAS NOT BEEN SERVED.Thomas, 28, pleaded guilty on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026, to first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in d*ath. Jackson County Judge Sarah A. Castle sentenced her to 13 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, with no probation and credit for time already served. Prosecutors dismissed the first-degree m*rder charge as part of the deal. Her jury trial had been set for Oct. 5.Za’Riah Mae Thomas was born Dec. 14, 2023, in Kansas City. On Feb. 9, 2024, police were called to a home in the 4100 block of Forest Avenue in Manheim Park after a report that the baby was not breathing. She was about eight weeks old.Relatives had left Thomas alone with Za’Riah earlier that day. One told police that mother and daughter seemed to be in good spirits when the family left. Around 1 p.m., Thomas called him, said something was wrong with the baby and told him to come home immediately. He said he smelled smoke as he entered the house and found Za’Riah in her crib. When he asked Thomas what had happened, she told him: “I thought I put Za’Riah in her crib and I accidentally put her in the oven.”Police later found the baby in a car seat in the living room near the front door. Court papers described burns across her body, clothing that appeared to have melted onto her diaper, and a baby blanket with significant burn marks. The Kansas City Fire Department pronounced her d*ad at the scene. Thomas declined to speak with detectives after they advised her of her rights. The charging file does not say how long Za’Riah was inside the oven.Prosecutors first charged Thomas with child endangerment on Feb. 10, 2024. A grand jury later added first-degree involuntary mansl*ughter, and a subsequent indictment added first-degree m*rder. At a Feb. 20 hearing, a judge reduced her bond from $200,000 to $100,000 after defense counsel said she had no prior criminal record. The offense to which Thomas pleaded guilty is a Class A felony, carrying a sentence of 10 years to life. Her plea paperwork did not raise a mental disease or defect defense, and Judge Castle found that she entered the plea freely and voluntarily. Thomas also owes $68 to Missouri’s Crime Victims’ Compensation Fund.Then-Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker called Za’Riah’s d*ath a gruesome tragedy when the case was first charged. Kansas City police counted it in the city’s 2024 hom*cide total.#TrueCrime #KansasCity— Blue Lives Matter (@bluelivesmtr)
